Discipleship Series: The Church Family

Scripture: Ephesians 4:1–6, 11–16

Following Jesus brings us into a relationship with His people. In this message, The Relationship Within the Relationship, we considered what it means to belong to the church family. A growing relationship with Christ should influence how we relate to His body. Our faith reaches into the way we love, serve, respond to leadership, and take responsibility for the people God has placed beside us.

We belong to a body

Ephesians 4 describes a people joined together under one Lord. Unity requires humility, gentleness, patience, and a willingness to bear with one another in love. These qualities become practical when we encounter people whose personalities, needs, and perspectives differ from our own. Belonging means learning to care about the health of the whole family.

The sermon used the body to help us see that connection. A body functions well when its parts work together. If a part becomes concerned only with itself, other parts are affected. Likewise, our choices within the church can strengthen or burden the people around us. Following Jesus calls us to consider how our actions affect His people.

Relationships carry responsibilities

The relationship between pastor and congregation was one example within the larger church family. Those called to lead have a responsibility to care, teach, and help equip people. The congregation also participates through faithfulness, prayer, encouragement, and a willingness to grow. Healthy ministry involves people responding to their responsibilities before God.

That principle extends beyond any one relationship. We can become focused on what we expect others to provide while overlooking what we have been called to contribute. A useful question is: How am I helping this family become stronger? That question brings discipleship into our conversations, our attitudes, and the way we respond when someone needs help.

Love has a practical expression

The message pointed toward responsibilities such as carrying burdens, encouraging, praying, serving, and loving one another. These actions require attention. We need to know enough about the people around us to notice when someone is discouraged, overwhelmed, or in need of support.

Practical care may involve making time for a conversation, following through on a promise to pray, helping meet a need, or offering encouragement during a difficult week. We cannot personally meet every need, but we can remain willing to respond to the opportunities in front of us. A caring church family grows through those ordinary acts of faithfulness.

Every part has a share

Ephesians 4:11–16 describes leaders equipping God’s people for ministry and a body growing as each part contributes. That picture gives us a way to apply the sermon’s challenge. The church needs believers who are willing to learn, serve, and help the ministry move forward together.

We can begin by examining both our relationships and our participation. Is there someone we need to encourage or make things right with? Is there a responsibility we can faithfully carry? As we grow closer to Jesus, the Head, we should become more attentive to His body. Choose one step that expresses your belonging through care, unity, or service this week.

Key Takeaways:

  • Belonging to Jesus connects us to His people.

  • A healthy church family grows through love, unity, and shared responsibility.

  • Every member has a part in strengthening and serving the body.

Reflection:
